My bedroom at the Kirekton
My bedroom at the Kirekton

Sydney’s Kirketon Hotel offered a comfortable bed and a convenient location close to the Central Business District.
Unfortunately a noisy neighbour (or thin walls – not sure which) meant I spent quite a bit of time lying awake in that bed. What sounded like a loud phone conversations made getting to sleep difficult while  snoring in the morning meant  I was awake in plenty of time for my breakfast meeting!
What: Room 306 Kirketon Hotel, 229 Darlinghurst Road, Darlinghurst, New South Wales
Who: JB

How Did It Rate?

The bed. As I was in a standard room the bed was only a double, but the size was fine. The hotel promotes its MicroCloud bedding as offering the ultimate in comfort and it was indeed very comfortable.

The wi fi. It was free and relatively fast.

The facilities in the room. While small, the room still included a handy little desk, 32 inch TV, DVD and CD player. A walk in wardrobe  included a safe, mini bar and some cupboard space. There was a large shower in the bathroom and most importantly the water was hot.

The location – although for some this might be a disadvantage. The hotel is located in Kings Cross – although on the `quieter side’ of the Cross. Kings Cross Station is only a short walk away while numerous buses run down Williams Street. Hailing a taxi is also very easy.

Helpful staff.

While I didn’t have time to use all the facilities, the hotel does promote free use of a nearby gym.

The walk in wardrobe in my room included an ironing board, in room safe, bar fridge and tea and coffee making facilities.

The room was small and my window (which couldn’t be opened) looked out onto a brick wall. As I was travelling alone and had numerous meetings, and thus was out much of the time, this wasn’t an issue for me – but it might be for some. At the same time the hotel spiel does explain this room is suited to the solo traveller.

No lifts. Again this wasn’t an issue for me as I only  had carry on hand luggage  and was on the first floor, however it might bother some.

Either thin walls/bad insulation – or an excessive noisy neighbour. At times I could also hear footsteps above me so have a feeling it may the former.
