A warming fire doesn’t often feature as a highlight of an accommodation stay in Australia in February.

However the gas fire awaiting us on our arrival at Aldermere Estate Apartments in Strahan was most welcome, given the nine degree Celsius outside temperature.

Indeed such were the temperatures during our four night stay in the Tasmanian town the fire became a necessity both in the morning and at night.

As well as providing much needed heat, the fire also added to the old- worldly charm of the our two bedroom apartment’s living area.

Dark in color and featuring antique style furniture, the décor is unlikely to appeal to lovers of everything modern.  However it’s the perfect fit for the style of accommodation on offer.

In keeping with the heritage feel of the property there’s no wi-fi but there’s a VCR player and an extensive video library in reception together with a number of books.

What: Apartment 5, Aldermere Estate Strahan

Who: Jenny Burns

When: February 10 to 14.

How Did It Rate:

The facilities. Our two bedroom apartment featured a downstairs kitchen, dining area, lounge room with two couches and one bedroom with an adjoining bathroom. Upstairs there was another bedroom with an ensuite bathroom complete with a spa bath. The downstairs bathroom, which featured a huge shower complete with rails and a showering chair, seemed to be aimed at disabled travellers.

The kitchen featured all the necessary equipment for self-catering.

The apartment was clean and rubbish was removed daily.

The upstairs bedroom

Electric blankets on the beds which were very welcome given the temperature.

The décor of the apartment which bought back memories of my grandparents living room.  The gas log fire added to the welcoming feel and atmosphere of the room.

On ringing to confirm travel times the owner provided very useful information about tourist attractions around Strahan.

Lack of views. The apartment is located on of Strahan’s main streets and it’s around a 10 minute walk to the Esplanade. However the town’s local IGA supermarket is only a short stroll away.

No internet access but Telstra’s 4G network works efficiently. This however wasn’t any use to my international travelling companion who required internet access. Fortunately Banjo’s Bakery Café includes free internet time with its purchases and even more fortuitous its cakes and sandwiches are delicious!

Reception is not manned at all times but phone contact details are displayed.

While the apartment was very quiet during the night light sleepers in the downstairs bedroom may awake in the morning to the sound of a nearby rooster! This wasn’t a problem in the upstairs bedroom.
