Opening the various drawers in my room at Pelican Sands Bed and Breakfast on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula provided a number of surprises
Located in the Victorian sea-side town of Portarlington, Pelican Sands features five themed rooms. As the name suggests my room – Moulin Rouge – was decorated in a French theme. And while some `French inspired’ decorations were obvious, such as several Eiffel Towers, others were hidden away in drawers – including plenty of feathers.
Overall my stay was comfortable and the B&B proved a good base from which to explore the Bellarine Peninsula.

How did it rate?
My room was light, bright, clean and imaginatively decorated.
Owner Susan provided a warm and informative welcome, suggesting places to eat and sights to see around the Bellarine Peninsula.
Unlike the other four rooms, mine didn’t have a spa in the bathroom, however it did have a small balcony which the other rooms didn’t. All the other bedrooms were downstairs, while mine was upstairs-next to the kitchen and a large sitting/dining area which led to a public area expansive balcony.
Breakfast provisions – bread, croissants, a choice of cereals, yoghurts and orange juice – were in plentiful supply. The kitchen was very well stocked, however due to regulations, no cooking is allowed. There is a microwave which guests can use. Guests are also welcome to use cutlery, crockery and glasses for any takeaway food/wine etc. The only request –put your dirty dishes in the dishwashers. Sadly this request seemed to have been ignored on one of the three nights of my stay.
A large selection of DVD’s, effective air-conditioning and a ceiling fan, which, given the warm weather and the room’s location on the top storey, were all welcome!
The house is a short stroll from the beach and opposite the Point Richards Fauna and Flora Reserve. Behind the back fence is a large paddock filled with sheep, adding a country feel.
My morning and evening walk from the house along the beach to the township of Portarlington for a morning cappuccino – followed by a stroll to the wharf – were relaxing outings. As I discovered Portarlington is home to a fleet of Mussel fishing boats.
While close to beach and nature, Pelican Sands is located around three kilometres by road from Portarlington, so if you want to eat out at night and not walk to dinner a car is necessary.
The house is located in what seems to be part of a new development on former farm land- thus explaining the sheep at the back of the property. My balcony overlooked a neighbouring house and the occupant and his small dog, who was a `barker’, were evident at times- but fortunately not at bed time!
The advantage of being next to the kitchen was ease of access to breakfast and a kettle (although I also had one in my room). The disadvantage was the area was open to all guests and while on the first two nights my fellow houseguests stayed in their rooms, on the last night a couple decided to take full advantage of the stereo and facilities.
This didn’t stop me sleeping but could be a concern if you happen to be staying at the same time as `noisy night owls.’ Having said that being an early riser I am not sure what impact my breakfast preparations in the morning may have had on those in the rooms below!
